IN RE PASSING OF PROFESSOR
JOHN L. COOK
PER CURIAM
This October, Professor John Cook passed away following a lengthy and heroic battle
with cancer. On this occasion, the Arkansas Supreme Court acknowledges his commitment
to improving legal education and the practice of law.
Until his passing, John Cook served as the Advisor to the Arkansas Committee on
Civil Practice. Despite his challenging medical issues, he remained active on the
Committee––even if it meant participating remotely and responding to emails in the middle
of the night. He believed it was a “true honor” and an “incredible opportunity” to serve
the court. Professor Cook also served as a vital subcommittee member on the Supreme
Court’s Committee on Automation, advising on artificial intelligence, an issue on which he
was passionate.
Professor John Cook taught Research, Writing, and Advocacy and was the Director
of the Rural Practice Incubator Project at the University of Arkansas Bowen School of Law.
He received his B.A. from Yale University, his M.Sc. from Oxford, and his J.D. from Duke
University School of Law.
Professor Cook leaves behind a legacy through his students and his service to this
court, and he will be dearly missed. The Arkansas Supreme Court extends its condolences
to his family and his friends and especially to Ariele Baker.
Special Justice CORY COX joins.
WEBB, J., not participating.
